This is my first entry and let me tell you, this blog is a review thing for musical albums, singles, and music videos. I normally rant at the beginning and then I'll kick things up. For overall introduction, I love practically every genre and I draw a lot. Well anyway, I'll start off with some stuff with Aaliyah.
1. We Need a Resolution (featuring Timbaland) :: The song starts with a good 'ol hip hop beat overlaid with the phrase "I'm tired of arguing girl" before Aaliyah sings. The instrumental hardly changes throughout the entire song. More was put in once the chorus rolls along and some was taken away when Timbaland has his rap solo. The consistency of the instrumental makes the entire song seem repetitive, but that's how most hip hop music is like unfortunately. Nothing's too harsh so the overall song is very laid back- almost an easy listening feel to it. The chorus is somewhat catchy. Overall, the song makes a decent opening for the album.
2. Loose Rap (featuring Static) :: I think it was a good choice to stick "I'm sick of tired of this loose rap" at the very beginning of the track since the song maintains the same mood as We Need a Resolution. The beat remains the same throughout the entire song and the repeating instrumental is very smooth. However, the mood is a bit more intense since the tempo is a bit faster and the subject is more offensive. Despite the repeating chorus and beat, the song is much more like-able than the first song. It calm enough to just sit to and fast enough to dance to. Like most of the songs on her previous albums, her songs have a true hip hop feel. When I say that, I mean the feel you get when you listen to a song that is obviously in the hip hop genre and you feel proud to know so since you love the song so much.
3. Rock the Boat :: This song is so beautifully different than any other song on this album. The atmosphere is reminiscent of perhaps a quiet day on the beach or a boat. As an artist, when I hear songs, I also see different color combinations. So when I first heard this song, I visualized the main theme of orange relating to a beach scene. The song also ties in with the album cover in that perspective. The beat doesn't stay the same and either does the main body of the instrumental. Normally when I find instrumentals to certain hip hop songs, I don't really like them. But I would really consider getting an instrumental only track of this song if I came across it. Its almost a lounge, down-tempo beat and its great to listen to when just chilling. I highly recommend this song. If you want to sample some of Aaliyah's songs, this should be one of them.
4. More than a Woman :: The fact that the overall song stands out in the album in a good way makes up for the fact that the song is a bit repetitive. The melody is lacking in the song and the stronger vocal presence of Aaliyah's singing is barely enough to save the song. The lyrics and the chorus could be a bit catchy at times too. Moreover, this song was rather popular at the time of the album's release and there was even a music video filmed for it. Its obvious that it was catchy enough for a lot of people but Aaliyah has definitely done better.
5. Never No More :: Right off the bat, the song isn't too catchy and the melodies that occur after the first verse seem awkward and out of place. The chorus seems a bit more like a bridge to the chorus rather than a chorus. The so called bridge is immediately followed by the second verse, leaving the listener in a "hey! wait a minute..." position. However... the song is a lovely soulful song that really does show off Aaliyah's vocal range and the lyrics are very meaningful and hit home for some (especially me). For that reason, the song is very lovable and brings back emotion everytime the song is heard. The song especially seems a bit more sad after listening to the upbeat and determined sounding More than a Woman. On a happier note, the song does tie its awkward ends as it draws near an end.
6. I Care 4 U :: This song seems really similar to the previous track only because the songs have similar beats and almost identical tempos. The backing instruments in the song is enough to differentiate between this song and Never No More. Also, the melody is different. Speaking of the melody, the entire song has a simple and relaxed feel to it despite the "desperate" lyrics spilled out since the verses have the same strong vocal quality as the chorus. Since its another soulful song, this song also shows off what Aaliyah could sing. Its hard to really comment on this song since its so painfully simple but at the same time it's able to carry such strong lyrics.
7. Extra Smooth :: Whenever people have a run-through of listening to an entire album, there are a few songs that people just feel like skipping over and this one is most likely one of them. The song isn't bad per-say, its just really monotonous at times since the same few notes are being played over and over again in the background while the melody repeats in the same manner. There could be a few instances in which some could actually like the song since Aaliyah's voice seems to have a catchy groove on its own. Overall, the song seems like just a filler song in the album.
8. Read Between the Lines :: The song started out like another Extra Smooth in which the song sounded like the equivalent of someone just playing the drums. As the chorus rolled the song, the vocal presence decreased, which makes things a bit interesting. About halfway through the song, the melody became somewhat scrambled but somehow everything blended together. It is obvious that the song is very well planned out. Its not a really great Aaliyah song but it is quite unique.
9. U Got Nerve :: The opening had the same spirit as the previous track and my initial fear is that its going to sound the same, but as the chorus rolled in, the song started to pick up the slack. The chorus made the song extremely catchy. The very melody makes its fun to sing later on. Its reminiscent to most mainstream hip hop songs that are repetitive but darn fun to sing.
10. I Refuse :: The song starts out simple and if it remained simple, the song would've been extremely boring. After the chorus, more background instruments were layered on. When the strings were added it, it almost made the song completely different since the mood the song changed from a calm sadness into a something fatally serious. There is really no reason NOT to like this song but I personally don't really connect with this song. Perhaps it a bit more popish than Aaliyah's other songs and I'm just so in love with the hip hop girl that she is.
11. Its Whatever :: The song starts out with a nice touch that is similar to the beginning of Rock the Boat. Afterward, it goes into a keyboard or piano background with a soft and low hip hop beat. Such a combo has been used in some other Rap and R&B songs by other artists like Missy Elliott and Substantial. My opinion is that it sounds extremely pretty but since it has been overused like the intense string rifts in rap songs, its understandable if some people don't like it. Aaliyah's voice maintains the same volume and intensity throughout the entire song and its very soft, making the song overall relaxing, safe, and possibly boring for some.
12. I Can Be :: The way Aaliyah sings from the starts makes the listener connect with the determination she expresses. The song has a strong start and gets softer in the verses. The verses and the chorus sound similar so the overall melody seems like an extremely repetitive song. Since the song doesn't stand out very much and maintains the same...let's say... everything, the song is just filler.
13. Those Were the Days :: The melody of Aaliyah's voice moves in a very rhythmic way from the start to finish. Since her voice is the only thing that is sort of interesting, the song is very forgettable. However, its very laid back. Listening to it has the same effect as a smooth instrumental: its very soothing like some lounge beat but there's nothing special about this piece. Its just okay.
14. What If :: This song snaps you out of the laid-back feeling of Those Were the Days. There is surely nothing unique about this song to make it a great hit, but it's still a decent song. The song is really catchy - especially when Aaliyah starts singing in a rhythmic way in the chorus. Its a song that can make you want to sing along. The mood is more of determination once again. However, the song can turn some off towards the end since the chorus is repeated over and over in almost the same way. But as I said, the song isn't great but its catchy.
15. Messed Up :: The mood intensifies at first in the song. You can hear Aaliyah dominate over everything in this song in a good way. Its disappointing when her voice gets jumbled up in the chorus musically. Such a thing really is "messed up." The verses are sung really well and its sure fun to sing along. Its not quite like an interlude since the melody is very strong and the song isn't repetitive enough but it comes awfully close. There's a hidden track in this song but I'll review that separately.
16. Givin' Up :: The song takes it slow in the beginning. It starts out beautifully with Aaliyah's strong singing voice. Then, she goes softer for the first verse. It goes about in a dramatic and somewhat sad manner. The singing becomes stronger as the verse drags on. Eventually, it becomes almost a belt out. The entire song is a good showcase for Aaliyah's singing ability. The ending is really strong both instrument and singing wise. Its a nice grand finale for Aaliyah's 2001 album.
Conclusion: This isn't one of Aaliyah's best album but it's still a good buy. Almost all the songs are pretty strong and those that aren't are still nice to listen to. Aaliyah still stays true to her great hip hop vibe in her music and every Aaliyah fan should have this album.
For me, I rather like the album but I keep listening to the first three songs over and over again. I just love the startup of the album. For those who don't like hip hop, they won't share the same opinion as me, moreover, they may not like the album in general. If you like smooth hip hop and R&B music, then I strongly recommend this album or any of Aaliyah's for that matter.
